Community-Engaged Research (CER) Graduate Student Internship Program
The Community-Engaged Research (CER) Graduate Student Internship Program, facilitated through the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Community Research Platform (CRP), provides opportunities for MA and PhD students to work with CRP partner organizations on research projects that support organizational needs and priorities and have tangible benefits for communities.

Project: Development of the Centre[4] Arts & Research
Job Description: Centre[3] for Artistic + Social Practice is seeking a graduate student intern to support the creation of Centre[4] Art + Research, led by Colina Maxwell (Centre[3]’s Executive Director) and Cathy Paton (Centre[4] + McMaster Postdoctoral Fellow), in collaboration with McMaster University’s Faculty of Social Sciences Community Research Platform (CRP). Centre[3] for Artistic + Social Practice is seeking an MA or PhD student intern to support several key activities related to the Centre[4]’s visioning and development. The intern will work closely with the Centre[4] development team. Key tasks include (but are not limited to):
- Support the development of policy, guidelines, and practical resources for research
engagement between Artists/ arts organizations, and academic institutions:- Gather and review relevant literature and resources for equitable community university partnerships.
- Help define roles and expectations in collaborations between artists and universities.
- Help to outline and identify expectations of knowledge sharing in respect to the arts.
- Help to develop practical resources: template collaborative agreements, sample workshop activities, checklists, fee schedules, etc….
- Research:
- Environmental Scan and Literature Search to learn from existing collaborations between arts organizations/artists and researchers (locally, nationally, and internationally).
- Accessible Documentation System: help develop method of ongoing documentation for Centre[4] projects as they take place – accessible to those participating in the projects.
- Communication:
- Archives – help to create a system to categorize Centre[3]’s previous social practice projects with special focus on arts and research projects that can help inform Centre[4] development.
- Promotional material: help articulate content to describe Centre[4] for social media website.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Demonstrated interest in community-engaged, action-oriented research
- Previous experience with project coordination
- Skills in searching and synthesizing academic literature
- Experience in qualitative research/ participation on research teams is an asset
- Familiarity with arts-informed research practices
- Experience working as an artist, with artists, arts practices and/or arts organizations is an asset
Duration of Internship: 7.5-10 hours per week for approximately 32 weeks.
