Community-Engaged Research (CER) Graduate Student Internship Program
The Community-Engaged Research (CER) Graduate Student Internship Program, facilitated through the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Community Research Platform (CRP), provides opportunities for MA and PhD students to work with CRP partner organizations on research projects that support organizational needs and priorities and have tangible benefits for communities.

Project: Emotions Matter: Skill Building, Emotional Resilience and Social Support for Care Workers
Job Description: The John Howard Society of Ontario (JHSO) is seeking a PhD. student Intern to support the organization’s research activities on incarceration and reintegration while also serving as a liaison between the JHSO and McMaster’s newly developed Centre for Incarceration and Reintegration (CIR). Key tasks include (but are not limited to):
- Work with JHSO staff leads on several applied research and evaluation projects related to incarceration and reintegration. For example, the intern may assist with research data analysis, literature reviews, report writing, stakeholder engagement and the development of funding proposals.
- Act as a point person for collaborative projects between the JHSO and McMaster’s CIR and identify and foster new relationships and opportunities
- Assist with the coordination of ongoing collaborative projects between JHSO, McMaster and other community partners
- Act as a knowledge broker/information sharer/connector between incarceration and reintegration work happening at JHSO and at McMaster University
- Help to further develop the community-engaged research component of the CIR’s work
Required skills and experience:
- Strong qualitative research skills
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse range of academic and community stakeholders
- Effective writing, oral and organizational skills
- Efficient computer capabilities including Microsoft Office Suite, SPSS, NVivo
- Demonstrated interest in community based, action-oriented research
- Specialization in criminal justice and/or human sciences which may occur either through university training and/or previous experience
- Knowledge of theoretical and empirical research in the areas of penology and criminal justice
- Knowledge of applicable legal and ethical research and evaluation considerations
Duration of Internship: 7.5-10 hours per week for approximately 26 weeks.
Value of Award:$6,000
