You’re Invited! Expanding Horizons: Shaping Public Library Knowledge and Practice Through Partnered Research Symposium

McMaster’s Community Research Platform, in partnership with Hamilton and Burlington Public Libraries, will co-host the inaugural Expanding Horizons: Shaping Public Library Knowledge and Practice Through Partnered Research Symposium on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Central Library on the 4th Floor.
This full-day event will bring together students, scholars, library leaders, frontline library workers, and community partners to share and showcase the latest research in the public library sector and to foster dialogue and collaboration between researchers and library staff.
The symposium will feature a keynote address by Dr. Paulette Rothbauer, Professor of Library and Information Science at Western University, highlighting the profound impact of libraries on social well-being. Three sessions will follow:
- Horizons in Focus – lightning talks showcasing collaborative research between academic and library partners
- Topics on the Horizon – a panel discussion exploring contemporary challenges in librarianship
- Future Horizons – an interactive session building a Community of Practice to sustain collaboration beyond the event
The day will also include a Student Poster Showcase, featuring projects from undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines. Abstract submissions open September 1, 2025. Selected posters will be printed and displayed at the Central Library, with printing costs covered by HPL.
By spotlighting both academic and community-driven research, the symposium reflects a shared commitment to collaboration and to shaping the future of public libraries.
